CC vs Note Mapping in Ableton

If you map a CC number to a toggle button on Ableton, value 127 will engage it and value 0 will disengage it. That's great if you want to have absolute control over a function, to turn it on or off.

However, there may be times you also want to make changes on Ableton using your mouse or on the computer itself. This will cause Ableton to be out of sync with your MIDI controller if you have mapped a CC toggle switch to control it.

For example, if you arm a track using your MIDI controller (sending value 127) and then use a mouse click to disarm it, the next time you press the same switch on your MIDI controller it will disarm the track again (sending value 0), causing you to have to press the switch twice to arm the track. This is undesirable and there is a solution to this.

If you map a Note On message to the track arm function instead, track arm will always toggle to the opposite state regardless of what state it is currently in. This way you can arm/disarm tracks with your MIDI controller, make changes on Ableton, and then go back to using your MIDI controller to control Ableton without controls going out of sync.
