How to use four cable method (4cm) with Morningstar Switchers (effects before amp and in FX loop)
Four-cable method and Morningstar switchers (ML5, ML5R, ML10X)
Our loop switchers (ML5, ML5R, and ML10x) are all capable of routing some effects in front of an amp and other in the effects loop of the amp (after the preamp but before the power amp) . This is often referred to as the "Four Cable Method."
On all our devices, this will generally mean using one loop to be the junction between the front of the amp and the effects loop.
ML5 and ML5R
On the ML5 and ML5R, the method will be the same. You'll need to sacrifice one loop to the junction. The only difference is that on the ML5, the loop order stays exactly as you set it, while on the ML5R, you'll be able to move loops/pedals to the "front" and "back" as you wish. Here's how it works, using Loop 3 as the junction:
Instrument => ML5(R) Input
Loop 3 Send => Front of Amp
Amp FX Send => Loop 3 Return
ML5(R) Output => Amp FX Return
Loop 3 could be any of the loops (especially on the ML5R), and I've only chosen it here for symmetry. Loop 3 needs to always be on, unless you want to purposefully bypass the preamp and go straight to the power amp.
ML10X
The ML10x is a bit more flexible with its two inputs and two outputs. If you are running your rig in MONO, then you don't even have to sacrifice a loop. Instead, wire like this:
Instrument => ML10X input Tip
ML10X Output Tip => Front of Amp
Amp FX Send => ML10X Input Ring
ML10X Output Ring => Amp FX Return
One neat thing about this setup is that you can keep using "Simple Mode" in the editor, where the top row represents pedals before the amp and the bottom row is in the effects loop:

If you are using a STEREO setup, you will have to sacrifice a loop like with the ML5(R) above.
