Setting Up a MIDI Controller with Ableton Live

Ableton Live can receive MIDI messages from a Morningstar MIDI controller to control functions such as:

• Starting and stopping playback
• Triggering clips and scenes
• Controlling track volume, pan and mute
• Turning effects on and off
• Adjusting plugin parameters
• Triggering MIDI notes
• Sending MIDI Clock to your controller or other MIDI devices

This guide explains which MIDI settings should be enabled in Ableton Live.

1. Connect Your MIDI Controller

Connect your Morningstar controller to your computer via USB.
If you are using a MIDI interface instead, connect the MIDI OUT of your Morningstar controller to the MIDI IN of your interface.

Once connected, open Ableton Live.

2. Open Ableton's MIDI Settings

In Ableton Live, go to:
Settings/Preferences > Link, Tempo & MIDI
Scroll down to the MIDI Ports section.
Your Morningstar controller should appear here as both an Input and Output MIDI device.
You will see three options for each MIDI port:
Track | Sync | Remote
Each option serves a different purpose.

3. Recommended Settings for Controlling Ableton

For most Morningstar users, we recommend the following:

For the Morningstar MIDI output port, we generally recommend:

4. MIDI Mapping Ableton Controls

Once Remote is enabled for the Morningstar MIDI Input:

1. Enter Ableton's MIDI Map Mode.

Mac: CMD + M
Windows: CTRL + M

2. Click the Ableton parameter you want to control.

For example:

• Play
• Stop
• Record
• Track Mute
• Track Arm
• Device On/Off
• Volume
• Effect parameters

3. Press the switch on your Morningstar controller that sends the MIDI message.

Ableton will detect the incoming MIDI message and assign it to that parameter.

4. Repeat this process for any additional controls.
5. Press CMD + M or CTRL + M again to exit MIDI Map Mode.

Your mappings are now ready to use.

5. Controlling Ableton Using MIDI CC Messages

For most Ableton control functions, we recommend using MIDI CC messages from your Morningstar controller.
For example, a switch could send:
CC Number: 10
Value: 127
Ableton can then learn this message and assign it to a function.
For controls that toggle between two states, you can configure your Morningstar switch to send alternating values such as:
First press: CC 10 Value 127
Second press: CC 10 Value 0
This is useful for controls such as:

• Effect On/Off
• Track Mute
• Track Arm
• Device On/Off

You can configure these messages using the Morningstar Editor.

6. Controlling Ableton Using MIDI Notes

Ableton can also map MIDI Note messages to functions.
For example, a Morningstar switch could send:
Note Number: 60
Velocity: 127
This can then be assigned to an Ableton function through MIDI Map Mode.
MIDI Notes are particularly useful when triggering:

• Clips
• Scenes
• Drum racks
• Software instruments
• Samples

7. Sending MIDI Clock from Ableton

If you want Ableton Live to be the MIDI Clock master, enable:
Morningstar MIDI Output > Sync: ON
Ableton will then send MIDI Clock through that MIDI port.
You can use this to synchronize tempo-based functions on compatible Morningstar controllers and other MIDI devices.
For example, MIDI Clock can be used to synchronize:

• MIDI Clock messages sent to other devices
• Tempo-dependent effects
• Sequencers
• Drum machines
• Arpeggiators

If you are not using MIDI Clock, leave Sync OFF.
Avoid enabling Sync for both the Input and Output of the same device unless your setup specifically requires it, as this can create MIDI feedback or synchronization problems.

8. Sending MIDI from Ableton Back to the Controller

In more advanced setups, you may want Ableton to send MIDI messages back to the Morningstar controller.
For example, this could be used for MIDI feedback or other bidirectional MIDI workflows.
In this case, you may need to enable:
Morningstar MIDI Output > Remote: ON
For basic control of Ableton from a Morningstar controller, this is normally not required.

Recommended Basic Configuration

For most users who simply want their Morningstar controller to control Ableton Live:

Morningstar MIDI Input

Track: ON
Sync: OFF
Remote: ON

Morningstar MIDI Output

Track: OFF
Sync: OFF
Remote: OFF
If you want Ableton to send MIDI Clock:

Morningstar MIDI Output

Sync: ON
Everything else can remain unchanged.

Troubleshooting

Ableton does not respond to my controller

Check that:

• The Morningstar controller appears under Ableton's MIDI Ports.
• Remote is enabled for the Morningstar MIDI Input.
• Your Morningstar controller is actually sending a MIDI message.
• You have selected the correct MIDI port in the Morningstar Editor.
• Another application is not preventing Ableton from accessing the MIDI device.

You can also check Ableton's MIDI activity indicators at the top-right corner of the Ableton window. They should flash when MIDI messages are received.

MIDI messages are received but I cannot map them

Make sure:
Remote is enabled for the controller's MIDI Input.
Track being enabled by itself does not enable Ableton's MIDI Mapping system.

I am getting unexpected MIDI behaviour

Avoid enabling MIDI ports that you do not need.
In particular, you generally should not enable Sync Input and Sync Output simultaneously for the same device unless your setup specifically requires it.
Enabling unnecessary MIDI routing can result in MIDI feedback loops or unexpected behaviour.

Summary

For most Morningstar users controlling Ableton Live, start with:
Input:
Track: ON
Sync: OFF
Remote: ON
Output:
Track: OFF
Sync: OFF
Remote: OFF
Then enable additional functions such as Sync Output only when required for your particular setup.
Once Remote is enabled, use Ableton's MIDI Map Mode to assign MIDI CC or Note messages from your Morningstar controller to the functions you want to control.
