Getting Started

The MC6 PRO is designed to be used with the Morningstar Editor, which offers the best way to edit your banks and presets. With its powerful, flexible and user-friendly user, you’ll get your MIDI controller doing exactly what you want in no time.

Online Use

The Morningstar Editor web app is compatible with Google Chrome, Opera and Brave browsers only. However, you do not need to use a browser if you prefer downloading the Editor for offline use.

Offline Use

You can download and install the Editor for offline use if you do not have Internet access. There are the two ways you can do this:

  1. Install the Editor as a web app from Chrome or Brave browser. Instructions: Installing the Editor for Offline Use
  2. Download the Morningstar Editor application and install it.

Allow MIDI Access

When connecting to the Editor for the first time, Your browser will request permission for MIDI communication with connected MIDI devices. Click on Allow. You can access this setting via the icon next to the URL anytime.

Connect

With your controller connected to your computer via USB and the Editor open, click on ‘Connect’ in the first row to establish connection.

If no device is detected, click on Refresh list. If your controller is still not being detected, please follow these troubleshooting steps.

On Windows, it is not possible to connect 2 or more of the same devices (i.e. 2 MC8s) to the editor as the editor can only detect one device. However, different devices (i.e. 1 MC8 and 1 MC6) can be detected. This are no such issue with MacOS.

Multiple editor instances can be opened in different tabs if using the Web Editor. Barring the issue for the Windows platform listed above, you can edit multiple device with multiple editors open.

Navigation

Tabs

The Editor will launch in the Edit Preset tab. Navigate different section of the Editor using the tabs:

  • Edit Preset : Edit your selected Preset settings

Select the banks and presets you want to edit from the side columns on the left and right.

Banks are located in the left column and Presets on the right.

Navigation Buttons

On the top right panel in the Editor, there are a few buttons to allow you to interact with your controller. The current active Bank and Preset is listed as well.

  • Toggle Preset - Toggle the selected preset between Position 1 and 2
  • Toggle Page - Scroll through the pages of your selected bank
  • Bank Down - Bank down on your controller
  • Bank Up - Bank up on your controller

Edit Switch Preset

Out of the factory, all switches are labelled EMPTY and do not send any MIDI messages. It’s up to you to label each switch and decide what it does! The combination of messages executed and sent by a switch is called a Switch Preset. With 16 different MIDI channels, each preset is capable of controlling up to 16 different MIDI devices at simultaneously.

In this example, Messages 1, 2 and 3 are executed by switch Press, Release and Double Tap respectively.

  1. Name - Give your switch a name so you always know what purpose it serves.
  2. Long Name - Longer name for preset. Displayed in the center section only when the preset is engaged.
  3. Text Color (only on PRO controllers) - Click on the rendered text to change text color. Customizable for each toggle position (Position 1, Position 2 and Shift, which are explained later).
  4. Strip Color (only on PRO controllers) - Click on the bottom portion under the preset name to add a color strip. Available for each state (Position 1, Position 2, Shift).
  5. Background Color (only on PRO controllers) - The color for the background of the Short Name. Available for each state (Position 1, Position 2, Shift)
  6. Preset Messages - Each switch on your Morningstar controller can send/execute any combination of up to 32 different MIDI messages of your choice. Choose the Action you want to use to trigger a message, message type and input your desired message parameters.

Message Types

For the full list of message types available and detailed information about what each does, please refer to the Message Types manual.

Here are the 3 general categories of message you can execute:

MIDI

Morningstar controllers can send virtually any type of MIDI message you need. From standard PC (Program Change) and CC (Control Change) messages to MIDI Clock, Note, SysEx, MMC, Realtime and more.

Device Messages

You can also program switches on your controller to execute device functions such as jumping to specified banks, scrolling up/down through pages/banks, engaging other switch presets and more.

Keystrokes

Morningstar controllers can also send keystroke commands, allow you to mimic using a computer keyboard with your feet. This is especially useful for DAW control, which often utilises hotkeys and keyboard shortcuts.

Action Types

You can send different MIDI messages depending on what action you perform on a switch. You can assign each message to an action including Press, Double Tap, Release or Long Press (and more). This allows you to group MIDI messages by actions so a single switch can perform multiple functions.

You can also use actions to create a momentary switch effect. For example, you can trigger CC#1 with value 127 with a Press action, and CC#1 with value 0 with a Release action. When the switch is pressed, value 127 will be sent, and when the switch is released, a value 0 will be sent. This could for example allow to you to trigger an effect while holding down a switch, and stop it upon release.

For all the available Action types and their descriptions, please refer to the Action Types manual.

Toggle Positions

A Preset has 2 toggle positions and a temporary shift position. It can send different messages depending on which position it is in.

The 3 unique positions are:

  1. Position 1 - The default position for all presets. In the example above, Msg 1 gets sent when the switch is pressed when in Position 1. Take note of the toggle position assigned to each message (highlighted in orange).
  2. Position 2 - This is the position a preset will be in if it is engaged. In the example above, Msg 2 gets sent when the switch is pressed when in Position 2.
  3. Shift - The third and temporary position. A preset will only be in the Shift position if it is shifted by you. After a Shifted Preset is engaged, the Preset will return to its prior Toggle Position. In the example above, Msg 3 gets sent when the switch is pressed in the Shift position.

Toggle State Indicators

For each preset, you can have a different Name, Text Color, Background Color or Strip Color depending on which position the preset is in. This way you can tell if a preset is active, or if an effect is engaged or bypassed.

Toggling Presets

There are 2 ways to get a preset to toggle between Position 1 and Position 2:

  1. Toggle Mode - Enable Toggle Mode (highlighted green in the above screenshot). When Toggle Mode is enabled, the switch preset will toggle between Position 1 and Position 2 whenever it is engaged.
  2. Toggle Preset Message Type - Add a 'Toggle Preset' message that is triggered by your desired action. With this method, the preset will toggle only when that specific action is performed. It will not toggle if other actions are performed. For example, if you choose Double Tap to execute the Toggle Preset message, the switch preset will not toggle when pressed, released or long pressed.

Shifting Presets

🎬 Watch Shift State Video Tutorial

What is Shift?

Similar to Toggle Position 1 and 2, Shift is a state which the preset is in (similar to holding down the Shift key on your keyboard, but for this you don’t need to hold it down). Preset messages can then be set to execute only when the Preset “Shifted”. Once the Preset executes, the Preset will revert to the original (unshifted) state.

This gives you more flexibility in deciding what messages to send. For example, you can program a double-tap to shift the preset, and then have a Press action to send a CC#0 command, for example. After which, subsequent Press actions can be programmed to send a different message, until the Preset is shifted again.

How do I get the Preset to the Shift state?

Use the Set Toggle message type to shift a preset. Select Shift from the dropdown options.

In this example, presets A, C and D will be put into the Shift position when this switch is double tapped.

Toggling One Switch with Another

You can have switches interact with each other for optimal visual feedback and control over your effects. For example, you may have two switches each in a different bank used to toggle on/off the same effect. In this case, you would want the toggle states of both these switches to be in sync at all times.

In another scenario, you may have switches within a bank programmed to recall preset patches. In this case, you would only want one switch to appear engaged at any one time, so you know which preset is active.

Toggle Groups & Toggle Reset Groups

🎬 Watch Toggle & Toggle Reset Groups Video Tutorial

The simplest and most effective method to achieve the above would be to use Toggle Groups and Toggle Reset Groups.

Switches that are added to the same Toggle Group will always have their toggle states kept in sync. Switches added to the same Toggle Reset group will have their toggle states reset to Position 1 whenever another switch in the same group is pressed.

Switches that are added to the same Toggle Group will always have their toggle states matching and kept in sync.

Switches added to the same Toggle Reset group will have their toggle states reset to Position 1 whenever another switch in the same group is pressed.

You can also manually program one switch to set the toggle state of other switches with the Set Toggle message type.

Icons

Icons are a fun and intuitive way to mark your presets and banks, so you know what each one does at a glance. For example, you can add transport icons like Play, Pause, Stop, Forward and Back. From the Edit Preset tab, click on the ' ... ' icon next to the undo button. The icon library will pop up. Clicking on an icon will copy it to clipboard. You can then paste it onto your preset or bank name to add it.

Save, Copy, Paste & Swap Presets

lick on Save Preset to save your preset to your controller.

Copy & Paste Preset

Copy and paste your current preset to clipboard.

Copy, Paste, Swap, Clear, Undo Icons

Multi-clicking Paste

There are 3 different types of paste functions available depending on how many mouse clicks you make.

Clear Preset

Double clicking on ‘Clear’ will clear the entire Preset. You will need to click on ‘Save Preset’ to commit the clearing.

Undo

Undo last changes made to a preset if you have not saved preset to controller yet.

Preset Blink

pplicable only to Standard MIDI controllers without color screens. Enabling this will cause your preset name to blink when in toggle position 2 to reflect its toggle state. Controllers with color screens use color strips to reflect a preset’s toggle state.

Message Scroll

roll through and send messages in a preset sequential. Learn more about this feature [here](https://manuals.morningstar.io/mc-midi-controller/Preset-Message-Scroll-(scroll-through-messages-within-a-preset).186187784.html) and the Message Scroll Video Tutorial.

Copy, Paste & Clear Messages

You can copy and paste individual messages using the Copy and Paste buttons located on each message. Double click on Clear to clear a message.

You can also copy and paste multiple messages (even from different presets) by enabling the ‘Copy Multiple Messages’ function. Any messages you copy will be added to a buffer. When you click on Paste, all these messages in the buffer will be pasted to the messages in the preset.

To clear the messages in the buffer, click on 'Clear Multi Message Copy Buffer'.

PRO TIP: If you have multiple Morningstar controllers connected to your computer and have multiple Web Editors open, you can click on Copy on one editor and then Paste the settings to the other editor, if you want to quickly transfer your Preset settings between devices.

You can drag and drop messages to reorder them by clicking and holding on the ‘Msg X’ portion on the left of each message and dragging.

Click, hold and drag a message to rearrange it.

Edit Bank

  1. Bank Name - Displayed on screen.
  2. Clear All Preset Toggles - If ON, pressing one switch will reset the toggle states all other switches within the bank to Position 1. This is useful if you only want one preset to be in Position 2 at any one time, to indicate which Preset is active.
  3. Color - Customize Bank Name text and background colors.
  4. Limit Page - By default MC6 PRO presents 4 pages of 6 switch presets in a bank. You can limit how many pages are presented for a particular bank.
  5. Description - When 'Display Description' is enabled, description text will be displayed on Screen 3.
  6. Bank Preset Messages - You can send/execute messages on entering or exiting a bank. For example, you can send a PC message on entering a bank, and send a CC message on exiting the Bank (as shown in the screenshot). You can add up to 32 different messages.

Events that can trigger Bank Messages

The ‘Once Only’ events will execute only once the entire time the controller is powered. This will be reset by the next power cycle.

Copy, Paste & Swap Banks

Copy - Copies the current bank to clipboard.

Paste - Pastes the copied bank to current bank and immediately overwrites it.

WARNING! Pasting will overwrite the bank being pasted over and is irreversible.

Swap - Swaps current bank with the bank that is currently copied onto clipboard.

Rearranging Banks

You can reorder your banks by accessing clicking on the Controller Settings tab > Bank Arrangement.

Enable ‘Follow Custom Bank Sequence’ to use your own selection and order of banks. Drag and drop your desired banks from the Default Sequence to the Custom Sequence in the order that you like. MIDI Dictionary Favourites

By clicking on the MIDI Dictionary tab, you can search for devices and add them to your Favourites by checking their boxes.

Your favourited devices will appear in the popup box when you click on Open MIDI Dictionary from a CC message type.

User Library

If the device you need to control is not found in the MIDI Dictionary, you can submit a user request for it to be added here: https://www.openmidi.com/. If you prefer to curate your own personal library of PC and CC messages, you can do do with the User Library.

Adding Messages

The User Library allows you to store your own PC and CC messages with tags and descriptions so you can easily select them when editing presets.

Select the ‘User Library’ tab and click on ‘Add’ to start building your own library of MIDI messages. You can type in your own descriptions and comma-separated tags for easy searching and organization.

IMPORTANT! User Library data is stored in your browser cache and will be lost if your cache is cleared. To save a local backup of your User Library, click ‘Save to File’. Please do so regularly so as to reduce the risk of data loss. You can restore a backup by clicking ‘Load from File’, and clear all messages by double clicking ‘Clear All’.

Controller Settings

Set your controller’s global settings under the ‘Controller Settings’ tab. Controller settings are explained in detail in your MIDI controller's user manual.

Omniport Configuration

Independently configure each Omniport to function as an Aux Switch Input, Expression Pedal Input or MIDI Output.

TRS Aux Switch

Connect up to 1 to 3 non-latching switches per Omniport (or more on PRO controllers with resistor ladder switches). Each switch will serve whatever function you select.

Fixed Functions (work across all banks)

Selecting a fixed function will cause your aux switch to perform the same function regardless of which bank you are in.

Bank Up/Down - Bank up or down on your controller

Toggle Page - Toggle between page 1 and 2 of each bank

MIDI Clock Tap Tempo - Tap to set BPM and send MIDI Clock

Start/Stop/Toggle MIDI Clock - Start or Stop MIDI Clock send; Toggle between Start/Stop

Enter/Exit/Toggle Looper Mode - Enter or Exit Looper Mode; Toggle in and out of Looper Mode

Enter Bank Change Mode - Enter Bank Change Mode on your controller

Toggle Active Preset - Toggle last used preset to the opposite toggle position. This does not engage the preset but only toggles its position.

Bank Jump - Jump to a bank of your choice

Page Up/Down - Scroll through pages on each bank

Acting as Preset Switches

Selecting a specific Preset '?', will make an external aux switch trigger a specific preset and perform different functions depending on which bank you are in. This will make your aux switch function just like an onboard switch (just without a screen).

Resistor Ladder Aux Switch

Connect up to 8 (for non-PRO models) or 16 (for PRO models) external switches using Omniport 1. Only Omniport 1 supports this function. Set up and compatibility explained here.

Expression

Connect an expression pedal for smooth, continuous, sweep-able MIDI control.

🎬  Watch Expression Pedal Video Tutorial.

MIDI Out

Use an Omniport as a TRS MIDI output.

Type A (Standard) - Send MIDI on Tip and Power on Ring. This is the standard MIDI type.

Tip Active - Send MIDI on the Tip while Ring is left floating.

Ring Active - Send MIDI on the Ring while Tip is left floating.

Type B: Send MIDI on Ring and Power on Tip.

Ext Omniport Relay Interface

Choose this setting to connect the Morningstar Omniport Relay Interface.

CC Waveform Engines

A MIDI CC waveform is a flowing stream of CC messages oscillating between minimum and maximum CC values set by you. Think of it as an automated expression pedal. Or if you hired someone to to continuously rock your expression pedal back and forth with your desired sweep and speed. A MIDI waveform allows you to modulate different effect parameters, creating tonal effects such as vibrato, tremolo, sweeps and phasing. Similar to what an LFO does on a synth.

The number of Waveform Engines available depends on which controller you have. PRO models have 8 while Standard models have 4.

A CC Waveform Engine can be triggered by the CC Waveform Generator message type. More details here.

Also, watch these 2 videos for a more in-depth explanation and examples of application: https://youtu.be/JnbBQmYIzw8?si=FahpjT29pe0sJJm5 and https://youtu.be/hvHv_CcjUXs?si=Rjod8krQ6zP7jp16

Sequencer Engines

Send an automated sequence of CC messages with varying CC values.

A CC Waveform Engine can be triggered by the Sequencer Generator message type. More details here.

Scroll Counters

Scroll Counters are used for the ‘PC Number Scroll’ and ‘CC Value Scroll’ message types. They keep track of the scroll position as you scroll up/down. There are a total of 16 scroll counters available, Counter 0 to Counter F.

MIDI Channel Settings

MIDI Channel Name

Here you can name each MIDI channel so you know which channel corresponds with each of your devices. If you name your MIDI Channels, names will be displayed when you are selecting MIDI channels for your preset messages.

Remap MIDI Channel

You can remap a MIDI channel to another channel. This is useful for example, when you change the MIDI channel on your receiving device, so you do not need to go through every message to update them to be sent via the new MIDI channel.

Engage/Bypass Messages

Enable each of these to add Engage and Bypass messages for each MIDI channel. This will allow you to use the Multi Engage/Bypass message type to switch bypass states of multiple devices with just one message.

Select Output Ports

You can also dictate that messages sent via certain MIDI channels be sent only through selected MIDI Outputs. By default MIDI will be sent out through all MIDI outputs simultaneously but you can uncheck the boxes for the MIDI outputs you want excluded.

MIDI Message Converter

An external PC #1 message being converted to CC #7 with value 127 at the output

The MIDI Message Converter converts incoming PC, CC or Note messages to different outgoing PC, CC or Note messages. You can choose to convert these messages at the Input or Output. If converted at the Input, the controller will respond to the converted messages according to their converted forms. For example, it is possible to use an external Note message to trigger a Bank Up function on your controller controller if you convert the incoming Note message to a CC#0 message at the Input, which triggers the Bank Up function on Morningstar MIDI controllers.

Controller Backup

Back up your controller banks, presets and settings here.

Backing Up

Current Bank - Back up only the current bank to your computer. This does not include controller settings.

All Banks - Back up all banks to your computer. This includes your controller settings.

Restoring a Backup

Click on ‘Choose File’ to select the file you want to restore. If a Bank Backup file is selected, it will be loaded to the controller and replace the current bank. If an All Banks Backup file is selected, the entire controller and its global settings will overwritten.

Please ensure that there is only one instance of the Editor running. Running multiple editors may results in a back up or restore error.

Saving Controller Settings to File

When your controller is connected, your controller settings will be loaded into the editor. You can choose to backup these settings into a file stored in your computer.

Restoring Controller Settings from File

When you load a Controller Settings file in the editor, the data is not automatically saved into your Controller. Instead, the settings are loaded into the editor only. You can then view each tab (General Configuration, Configure Omniports etc) and then edit and/or save the settings in each section to your controller.

If it happens that your controller settings are not loaded to the Editor, click on the ‘Load Settings’ button. If the Settings are changed and saved, the controller will restart when it exits Editor Mode. This is done to load the new controller settings when the controller boots up.

MIDI Monitor

Monitor the MIDI messages being sent from your MIDI controller to make sure that your MIDI messages are being sent as intended.

Activity Monitor

The Activity Monitor allows you to see all the messages that are being executed when you engage a preset. This is useful for troubleshooting purposes. You can also click on a message for more details.

Editor Settings

The Editor Settings tab allows you to manage settings within the Editor.

Load Preset Data into Editor using Switch Press

By default, the controller loads data into the editor by using Switch Presses. However, when this setting is enabled, certain functions are blocked in the controller, like Bank Jump, MIDI Clock etc. This is because there is a need to differentiate when the user wants to load data, and when the user wants to engage the preset.

If you disable this setting, switch presses will no longer load data into the editor, but all functions are unblocked. In the editor, you can still select the preset to edit by using the Preset dropdown list.

Editor Profile

Backing up your Editor Profile

When you switch between computers or controllers, or between the Web Editor and Desktop Editor, some data remain stored locally and will not be preset when you switch. You can back up and restore this data here.

Editor Profile allows you to backup and restore data such as

  1. Message descriptions
  2. Scroll Counter Messages
  3. MIDI Channel Color Coding
  4. MIDI Dictionary Favourites

in the editor.

For example, in the Scroll Counter settings, you can edit the names of the scroll counters. The data is not stored in the controller, but in the editor itself. So, if you are using a different controller or computer to edit, you need to download the Editor Profile data into a file, and then load them according to what controller you are editing.

MIDI Channel Color Coding

When editing MIDI messages in your Presets, the messages parameters are color-coded to give better visuals on what device the message is for. You can arrange the color codes for the different MIDI channels here.

Global Message Parameter Update

The Global Message Parameter Update (GMPU) allows you to update all similar Preset messages globally to different parameters. The option is available in each message in the Preset settings.

For example, if you have a message like below programmed into different presets in the controller, and you would like to change all similar messages to a different MIDI channel, you can use the GMPU to do this.

How to use this

First, you need to load your preset settings into the editor. Do not save any change made in the preset.

For the specific message that you want to update globally, update the parameters that you want to change. You can also update the Action or Message Type (there is an option to match these types later) if you wish to change them globally as well.

In the picture below, I have changed the MIDI channel to 12. Note that I have a message Msg4 that is similar to the original unchanged message.

After selecting the GMPU function, a dialog box will appear which gives you the option whether to match and update the Action and Toggle Position. If the Match and update Action option is selected, what this means is that only messages that matches the selected message’s action will be updated. If the action has been changed, the matched message’s actions will be updated as well. The same logic goes for the Match and update Toggle Position option.

This function will not run for Empty message types.

After clicking on Update All, the controller will indicate that the function is running through the banks.

This process will take longer if there are more messages to be matched and updated.

Preset Tools

There are some useful tools in the Editor to allow you to improve your editing workflow.

Preset Templates

Quickly load common message templates into the editor and apply it to a Preset.

Create SysEx Preset

Paste a SysEx string into the Create SysEx Preset function. The Editor will update the Preset messages to send out the SysEx string that was pasted.

MSB LSB Calculator

Some MIDI devices utilises MSB and LSB to allow more control. Helps you to calculate the Most Significant Bits and Least Significant Bits for a given 14-bit number

Save & Load Preset to/from File

You can save and download a particular Preset to a .json file by clicking on the Save button.

The Load button allows you to select a Preset .json file that you previously saved. The Preset's settings will load into the editor. You will need to click on Save Preset to save the settings you loaded into your controller.

The Load from Cloud button allows you to go back in time to load preset settings from a recent automatic cloud backup.

Testing Individual Messages

If you have a MIDI message (PC, CC, Note etc) programmed in the editor, you can click on the leftmost 'Msg X' button to send that message out through your MIDI controller. Provided that MIDI Thru from your controller's USB port to its MIDI Outputs are enabled, it will forward the message out via its TRS or DIN ports. This is useful if you want to test send a specific message when controlling a specific device.

Another useful example for this is setting the MIDI Channel on Chase Bliss pedals, which requires a PC message to be sent to them on the desired MIDI channel. Using this feature will allow you to easily send that PC message out.

PC Messages

A dialog box will appear with a utility to allow you to send incremental or decremental PC messages on the selected channel before selecting the PC number to your message

CC messages

A dialog box will appear to allow you to send CC messages while moving the slider to vary the CC Value. You can apply the selected CC Value to your message.

Hot Keys

You can utilise hot keys to load presets and navigate the editor.

Forward slash ( / ) + Preset Letter - Load selected preset. Eg. /a loads Preset A and /1 loads Expression Preset 1.

Shift + Enter - Save Switch Preset or Bank Preset depending on which tab you are on.

Shift + Up Arrow - Bank Up

Shift + Down Arrow - Bank Down
